  • Surface coating of sublimation paper
Surface coating of sublimation paper   The surface coating of white sublimation paper is a functional coating located on the outermost layer of the paper. Its core function is to optimize printing accuracy, ensure smooth ink sublimation at high temperatures, and achieve easy detachment from the substrate after transfer printing, directly affecting the clarity of the transfer pattern and the cleanline ss of the finished product.   core functionality   1. Improve printing accuracy: The coating surface is flat and smooth, allowing the nozzle of the sublimation printer to accurately control the ink landing point, avoiding ink diffusion and smudging due to rough paper surface, ensuring clear edges and complete details of printed patterns (such as text and fine line patterns). 2. Boosting ink sublimation: The material is resistant to high temperatures (180-220 ℃ transfer temperature) and will not melt, stick or react chemically with the ink at high temperatures. It can allow the ink in the ink absorbing isolation layer to sublimate smoothly and penetrate the coating, transferring to the surface of the substrate (such as fabric, ceramics). 3. Achieve easy peelability: The coating surface has low adhesion, and after transfer printing is completed, the paper can quickly separate from the substrate without leaving coating fragments, paper fibers, or ink residue, avoiding contamination of the substrate surface and reducing subsequent cleaning steps.   Common materials and technical requirements   -Main material: Mainly made of high-temperature resistant resin, commonly such as polyamide resin, polyester resin, modified acrylic resin, etc. Some products may add a small amount of lubricant (such as silane based substances) to further reduce adhesion. -Key technical requirements: -High temperature stability: does not soften, deform, or decompose at high temperatures, otherwise it may cause pattern misalignment or substrate contamination; -Surface smoothness: The coating smoothness should reach the micrometer level to avoid affecting printing accuracy due to surface roughness; -Chemical inertness: does not react with sublimation ink (containing dispersed dyes), preventing ink discoloration or failure.   The impact on transfer printing effect   -If the smoothness of the coating is insufficient, it is easy to produce "burrs" and "blurriness" in the printed pattern, especially in the transfer of fine patterns (such as logos and text); -If the high temperature resistance is poor, the coating may stick to the substrate during transfer printing, causing "residual glue" and "marks", which can damage the appearance of the finished product; -If the peelability is poor, it may tear the substrate (such as lightweight fabrics) or cause the pattern to peel off when separating the paper.

  • Thermal sublimation paper ink absorption isolation layer
Thermal sublimation paper ink absorption isolation layer   The ink absorbing isolation layer of sublimation paper is the core functional layer between the substrate layer and the surface coating. Its core function is to accurately carry sublimation ink and prevent ink from penetrating into the substrate layer, while laying the foundation for subsequent high-temperature sublimation transfer printing. core functionality   1. Precise ink holding and control: Through the porous structure inside the coating, the sublimation ink during printing is uniformly adsorbed, so that the ink only stays on the surface or shallow layer, avoiding ink waste and incomplete transfer caused by penetration, and ensuring that the ink can sublimate completely during transfer. 2. Isolation protection: Thoroughly block the penetration of ink into the lower substrate layer to prevent the substrate (such as wood pulp paper) from absorbing ink and causing problems such as color fading and blurred patterns in transfer printing. At the same time, protect the substrate layer from the chemical composition of the ink. 3. Adjust drying speed: The coating composition can control the ink drying time, which not only avoids ink breakage caused by too fast ink drying, but also prevents pattern smudging caused by too slow drying, ensuring clear and complete printing patterns. Common materials and technical characteristics -Main materials: With porous resin as the core, commonly used materials include polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), acrylic resin, modified starch, etc. Some high-end products may add nanoscale fillers (such as silica) to optimize the pore structure. -Technical features: Uniform micrometer sized pores need to be formed inside the coating, and the pore size needs to match the particle diameter of the sublimation ink (usually 0.1-1 μ m), ensuring that the ink can be firmly adsorbed and quickly released at high temperatures (180-220 ℃) without chemical reactions with the ink.   Key performance indicators   -Ink absorption capacity: It needs to be compatible with the type of sublimation ink (water-based, oil-based). If the ink absorption capacity is too low, it may cause ink accumulation and smudging, while if it is too high, it may cause ink residue during transfer printing, affecting color density. -Ink impermeability: It is a core indicator. If the impermeability is poor, ink will penetrate into the substrate layer, which will directly cause the color of the transferred pattern to be dull and details to be lost. -High temperature resistance: It is necessary to withstand the high temperature during transfer printing, avoid coating softening, deformation, or fusion with ink, and ensure that ink can sublime and detach normally.

  • Structure of Thermal Sublimation Transfer Paper - Base Paper
Structure of Thermal Sublimation Paper - Base Paper   Thermal sublimation transfer paper is a special type of paper that plays a crucial role in thermal sublimation transfer technology. To understand its structure, we need to start with its various components.   1、 Base paper Base paper is the fundamental part of white sublimation transfer paper, just as important as the foundation of a house. 1. Material The base paper of sublimation transfer paper is usually made of natural fibers or synthetic fibers. Natural fiber Weiru wood pulp fiber has good ink absorption and certain strength. Wood pulp fibers come from a wide range of sources and are relatively environmentally friendly. In terms of artificial fibers, there are also applications such as polyester fibers. Polyester fibers have good stability and can maintain the shape and structure of paper during heat transfer printing. The material selection of the base paper will affect the performance of the entire transfer paper. If the ink absorption of the base paper is poor, the ink cannot be well absorbed during thermal sublimation transfer printing, which may result in blurry transfer patterns or uneven colors. If the strength of the base paper is not sufficient, the paper may be damaged during the transfer printing process due to pulling or high-temperature treatment, affecting the normal progress of transfer printing. 2. Thickness The thickness of the base paper is an important parameter. Generally speaking, the thickness of the base paper for sublimation transfer paper is within a certain range. If the base paper is too thin, it may not be able to withstand the pressure during the transfer printing process Force and heat can easily cause wrinkles or ruptures. Thin base paper may also cause ink penetration Excessive, affecting the accuracy of transfer printing. On the contrary, if the base paper is too thick, it will increase costs on the one hand and may affect the efficiency of transfer printing on the other hand. Because thicker base paper may pose certain obstacles during heat transfer, resulting in longer transfer time and potentially causing less vibrant colors in the transfer process. Usually, the thickness of the base paper for sublimation transfer paper is adjusted according to different application scenarios, such as in the production process When transferring clothes, a relatively thin base paper may be chosen, while when making larger flags or banners for transfer printing, a slightly thicker base paper may be used to ensure its strength.   3. Surface characteristics The surface smoothness of the base paper has a significant impact on the transfer printing effect. A base paper with a rough surface can cause uneven ink distribution, as the flow and penetration of ink on the rough surface are hindered. However, a base paper with a surface that is too smooth may result in poor ink adhesion, making it easier to transfer ink during the transfer process The phenomenon of ink sliding or gathering occurs in the middle. And the surface smoothness of the base paper is also crucial. So manufacturers producing base paper will adopt advanced papermaking processes, strictly controlling the thickness uniformity and surface smoothness of the paper. Generally speaking, the thickness error of high-quality sublimation transfer paper is controlled within a very small range, and the surface smoothness can also reach a high standard to ensure that the ink can be evenly adhered and transferred during transfer. The surface of the base paper may also undergo some special treatments, such as coating treatment. Some base papers have a thin coating on their surface, which can improve their ink absorption and adhesion.

  • Core structure of sublimation paper
1、 Base paper Base paper is the basic supporting part of sublimation paper. Its quality directly affects the stiffness, strength, and subsequent transfer effect of the transfer paper. The base paper is usually made of specific paper materials, such as common polyester fiber paper. Polyester fiber paper has good strength and toughness, can withstand various physical tensile forces during the transfer printing process, and is not easily damaged. This is crucial for ensuring the integrity of the paper during the transfer process, so that the pattern can be accurately and completely transferred to the target object. And the surface smoothness of the base paper is also crucial. If the surface of the base paper is uneven, it may cause wrinkles, blurriness, and other problems in the pattern during transfer printing. So manufacturers producing base paper will adopt advanced papermaking processes, strictly controlling the thickness uniformity and surface smoothness of the paper. -Generally speaking, the thickness error of high-quality sublimation transfer paper is controlled within a very small range, and the surface smoothness can also reach a high standard to ensure that the ink can be evenly adhered and transferred during transfer printing. 2、 Coating The coating is the core part of sublimation transfer paper, which plays a decisive role in the transfer effect of patterns. The coating mainly includes a coloring layer and an isolation layer. The chromophore contains dyes that can sublime at high temperatures. These dyes will directly transform from solid to gas under the high temperature of the sublimation transfer printing equipment, thereby achieving color transfer. Different dye formulas will determine the type and vividness of the transferred colors. For example, to transfer a bright red color, a specific red color is required   The dye formula can only achieve the desired color effect by precisely adjusting the composition and proportion of the dye.

  • What is sublimation technology?
Thermal sublimation technology is a special material migration phenomenon that occurs between solids and gases. It skips the liquid phase transition process and directly converts a substance from a solid to a gaseous state. This technology helps solve practical problems and boasts broad application prospects.   The process of thermal sublimation is highly unique: it first heats a solid material to a specific temperature, then applies pressure to transform the substance directly from a solid to a gas, bypassing the liquid phase entirely. This differs from the common phase transition process of substances (e.g., a solid melts into a liquid, which then evaporates into a gas). The application of thermal sublimation enables more efficient processing of solid substances and improves work efficiency.   Thermal sublimation technology offers numerous advantages. Firstly, it reduces energy loss, as no energy is consumed for liquid phase transition during the process. Secondly, it prevents substance loss during phase transition and increases material utilization. Additionally, it supports diversified applications such as high-speed separation, purity enhancement, and waste gas treatment.   In practical use, thermal sublimation holds broad potential across various fields. In the pharmaceutical industry, it can efficiently purify drugs to improve their purity and safety. In chemical processes, it is used for the preparation and separation of organic compounds, enhancing product quality. In environmental protection, it effectively treats waste gases containing pollutants to reduce environmental pollution. Moreover, it can be applied in materials science, the food industry, and other sectors.

  • The process of clothing sublimation printing
The process of clothing sublimation printing is an important technology in the modern fashion industry, which provides unlimited creative possibilities for clothing designers and manufacturers, while also increasing the added value of products. In this article, we will delve into the process and application of clothing sublimation printing technology.   Clothing sublimation printing technology is a process of transferring pigments from solids to cellulose fibers through high temperature and high pressure. This technology not only achieves bright colors and clear patterns, but also enables precise expression of details, making it widely popular in the fields of clothing design and customization. 1、 Technological advantages Strong color persistence and resistance to fading. It can achieve complex and colorful patterns and details. Suitable for various types of cellulose fibers, such as cotton, polyester, etc. 2、 Process flow The process of clothing sublimation printing mainly includes four steps: preparation work, pattern design, printing, and post-processing.     Clothing sublimation transfer printing requires the preparation of three core modules: equipment, consumables, and materials. The specific list is as follows: 1. Core equipment -Computer+design software: used for creating/editing patterns, commonly used software such as Photoshop, CorelDRAW, AI. -Sublimation printer: To print patterns onto transfer paper, special sublimation ink is required (ordinary ink cannot be used). -Heat transfer machine: Provides stable temperature, pressure, and time. Common types include flat plate heat transfer machines (suitable for flat clothing) and drum heat transfer machines (suitable for curved/thick materials such as hoodies and hats). 2. Specialized consumables -Thermal sublimation transfer paper: divided into matte, glossy and other types, it needs to be matched with the printer (such as inkjet transfer paper). -Thermal sublimation ink: It is transparent in color and will sublime into gas when heated. It is necessary to choose ink compatible with the printer model (such as piezoelectric sublimation ink for piezoelectric printers). -Auxiliary tools: High temperature tape (fixing transfer paper and clothing to prevent displacement), scraper (flattening fabric wrinkles), lint roller (cleaning dust/fluff on the surface of clothing to avoid pattern defects). 3. Applicable materials -Clothing fabric: It should contain more than 50% polyester fiber (pure polyester is preferred). Natural fibers such as cotton and linen are not suitable (sublimation ink cannot adhere). Common suitable fabrics include quick drying clothes, sportswear, and polyester hoodies. -Clothing to be printed: Ensure that the fabric is flat and free of stains, and it is recommended to clean it in advance.

  • Sublimation Transfer Paper VS Regular Transfer Paper
Transfer printing principle: Sublimation paper sublimates ink into gas at high temperature (about 200 ℃), penetrates the surface of the substrate, and achieves pattern transfer; Ordinary transfer paper is made by hot pressing to transfer and adhere the ink or coating on the paper to the surface of the substrate, forming a pattern.   Applicable materials: Sublimation transfer paper is mainly suitable for low cotton content fabrics such as light colored polyester fibers, as well as ceramics, metals, wood, etc. that have been specially coated; Ordinary transfer paper has a wider range of applications, including various fabrics such as cotton, polyester fibers, and their blends. It can also be divided into dark transfer paper and light transfer paper, which are used for dark and light colored clothing, respectively. Printing effect: The color reproduction of the pattern transferred by sublimation transfer paper is high, with no tactile sensation, and 100% color retention after washing; The color reproduction of patterns transferred on ordinary transfer paper is relatively low, and some ordinary transfer paper may have a rubber or heavy feeling after transfer, with slightly lower durability. However, some high-quality transfer paper can also achieve good results.   Operation process: When printing on white sublimation transfer paper, sublimation ink is required, and usually mirror printing is required; Ordinary transfer paper varies in type, some can be printed with ordinary ink, some light transfer paper requires mirror printing, and dark transfer paper can be printed directly. In addition, sublimation transfer paper does not require weeding or trimming after transfer printing, while ordinary transfer paper may need to remove parts of the paper other than the pattern.

  • Why does my sublimation ink keep smudging on sublimation paper?
The main reason why sublimation ink gets dirty on sublimation paper is that the ink is not fully dried/fixed on the paper or the paper coating has poor compatibility. It can be divided into the following four categories:   1. Insufficient drying: This is the most common reason. After inkjet printing, the ink needs time to dry (physically or chemically) on the coating of the sublimation paper. If it is not completely dried before touching, stacking, or entering the transfer process, the ink will rub off with external force, forming stains. 2. Paper coating issue: -Poor coating quality: The coating of inferior sublimation paper has insufficient ink absorption and fixation, which cannot stably lock the ink and can easily lead to ink diffusion and smudging. -Coating type mismatch: Different ink types (such as water-based and oil-based sublimation inks) are suitable for different sublimation paper coatings. Incorrect use can cause ink to not adhere properly and result in dirt and stains. 3. Ink related issues: -Poor ink quality: Poor quality ink has uneven particles, strong fluidity, or poor compatibility with paper coatings, which can lead to ink leakage and dirty edges after printing. -Improper ink concentration/usage: If the ink volume set by the printer is too large or the ink concentration itself is too high, exceeding the upper limit of the paper coating's ink absorption, excess ink will accumulate and dirty the paper surface. 4. Operation and equipment issues: -Printer nozzle malfunction: The nozzle is blocked or offset, causing uneven ink output and excessive ink in some areas, resulting in stains. -Improper post-processing after printing: fold or stack paper immediately after printing, or touch and print directly with your hands.

  • Metal sublimation transfer printing process
Metal sublimation transfer printing process Core principle: Sublimation ink is in a gaseous state at high temperatures and can only be combined with polymer coatings (i.e. special treatment layers on metal surfaces), rather than with the metal itself. 1. Preparation of substrate: Metal products (such as aluminum plates, cups, keychains, plaques, etc.) must first undergo pre-treatment and be coated with a special thermal sublimation coating on their surface. This coating is the key to the success of transfer printing, as it is responsible for receiving gaseous ink. 2. Printing: Use sublimation ink to print a mirrored (reversed) pattern on metal transfer paper. 3. Transfer printing: ·Tightly adhere the printed paper to the coated metal surface (usually fixed with high-temperature tape). ·Put it into a flat hot press or oven (for curved objects such as cups, a dedicated cup baking machine is required). ·Heat for a certain period of time (usually 60-120 seconds) under precise high temperature (usually 190-200 ° C) and high pressure (for flat plates). ·Ink sublimates into gas, penetrates paper fibers, and then reacts with the polymer coating on the metal surface, permanently curing. 4. Tear off: After heating, remove the item and tear off the transfer paper before or after cooling (depending on the coating type), and the pattern will be clearly presented on the metal surface.     Comparison between Textile Transfer Printing and Metal Transfer Printing Characteristic textile transfer printing (such as polyester clothing) metal transfer printing Metal, ceramic, glass, etc. with specialized polymer coatings on the surface of fabrics coated with polyester fibers or polyester coatings Universal sublimation paper is sufficient for paper requirements, and special paper with extremely high transfer rate and low residue must be used for relatively loose requirements Transfer printing equipment, drum hot stamping machine, flatbed machine (with relatively low pressure requirements), flatbed hot press machine (requiring uniform high pressure), oven, cup baking machine Temperature/time approximately 180-200 ° C, 15-50 seconds approximately 190-200 ° C, 60-120 seconds (longer time required for the coating to fully react) Medium to low pressure is sufficient to ensure complete adhesion between the paper and the hard surface The finished product has a tactile pattern that is integrated with the fabric, and may have a slight or no tactile sensation. The pattern is completely smooth and integrated with the metal surface.

  • Guidelines for Low Weight sublimation Paper
Guidelines for Low Weight Sublimation Paper Types and characteristics of heat transfer paper        Low weight heat transfer paper is mainly divided into several types, each with its own characteristics and suitable for different scenarios.        Type approximate weight (g/m ²) Main characteristics Applicable scenarios Core advantages.        Coated sublimation transfer paper with 25-45 coating to block ink penetration, good color performance for clothing and textile printing, high-precision images with bright colors, clear images, and high transfer rate.        Uncoated sublimation transfer paper 18-31.5 Uncoated, relying on the characteristics of the base paper to absorb ink, the paper is smoother and less prone to warping. High speed inkjet printing, water-based gravure printing, and transfer printing on various fabrics have low production costs and high efficiency, suitable for multiple inks, and can be used on both sides        Quick drying heat transfer paper with a weight of about 90 grams (but lower) has a fast drying speed, smooth surface, and efficient operation. After printing with a high-speed printer, it dries quickly, saving waiting time.         Regarding "grammage": grammage refers to the weight per square meter of paper (g/m ²). The lower the weight, the lighter and thinner the paper. Low weight heat transfer paper (such as 40 grams or less or even lower) has significant advantages in reducing material costs, improving production efficiency, saving storage and transportation space, and also reducing energy consumption during the production process. The advantages and value of low weight Printed sublimation paper         Choosing low weight heat transfer paper can bring the following benefits: 1. Cost reduction: For paper of the same weight, the lower the weight, the larger the area. For example, 28 grams of uncoated paper can produce approximately 4000 square meters more per ton than 31.5 grams of paper. 2. Improve efficiency: The paper is thinner, the thermal resistance is reduced, and the heat transfer speed can be increased by more than 10%. Quick drying paper can also shorten the waiting time for drying. 3. Quality assurance: By improving the formula (such as adding coatings of gelatin and starch) or papermaking process (such as using dissolving pulp), low weight paper can also carry high ink content and prevent penetration, ensuring image clarity and color saturation. 4. Environmental Protection and Convenience: Non coated paper reduces the production process, and the application of water-based ink is also more environmentally friendly. Paper is thinner and lighter, making it easier to store, transport, and operate. How to choose low weight heat transfer paper           When making a choice, the following aspects need to be considered: 1. Clarify the purpose and requirements: ·Is it for clothing printing or hard materials (such as ceramics, metals) transfer printing? ·What are the requirements for the vividness and precision of colors in images? ·Is it large-scale high-speed production or small-scale DIY? 2. Consider printers and ink: ·Confirm the printer model and ink type you are using (sublimation ink, water-based ink, etc.). Different types of paper have different compatibility with printers and ink, for example, uncoated paper usually has better compatibility with water-based ink. 3. Balance weight and performance: ·The lower the weight, the better. It is important to ensure that the selected weight meets your image quality and ink absorption requirements. For example, printing large areas of dark patterns may require paper with better ink absorption properties (such as coated or uncoated paper), rather than blindly pursuing ultra-low weight. 4. Pay attention to brand and reputation: ·Choose a reputable brand and refer to the reviews of other users. Domestic uncoated transfer paper (such as Jinzhan) can rival or even surpass some foreign products in terms of performance. 5. Cost effectiveness: ·Comprehensively calculate the cost reduction, efficiency improvement, and quality effect of single printing brought by using low weight paper, not just the unit price of paper.              Precautions for use 1. Storage conditions: Store the heat transfer paper in a cool and dry place, avoiding moisture and high temperatures, to prevent the paper from being deformed by moisture or the coating from changing. 2. Printer setting: When changing the white transfer paper type, you may need to adjust the media type, print quality and other settings in the printer driver, and test printing to ensure the best effect and avoid waste. 3. Transfer parameters: Different papers and substrates may require fine-tuning of transfer temperature, pressure, and time. It is best to conduct a sample test before use. 4. Pay attention to the front and back of the paper: Coated heat transfer paper is usually divided into front and back sides, and it is necessary to ensure that it is printed on the coated surface when printing. Uncoated paper may be usable on both sides, but it is still necessary to follow the manufacturer's instructions.

  • How to Properly Store Sublimation Paper
Environmental requirements( Store in a cool, dry place )   Temperature : Maintain between 15~25 ℃ to avoid high temperatures (>30 ℃ may cause coating adhesion) or low temperatures (<10 ℃ may make the paper brittle).   Humidity: The relative humidity should be controlled between 40% and 60%. If it is too humid (>70%), the paper may absorb moisture and deform, while if it is too dry (<30%), it may cause static electricity problems.   Avoid light : Keep away from direct sunlight, as ultraviolet radiation can damage the chemical properties of the coating.   Use airtight packaging   Keep store sublimation paper in airtight containers or resealable plastic bags. This will keep the paper dry and protect it from dust and contaminants.   Label the paperIf you have multiple packs of sublimation paper, it’s best to label them with the purchase date and specific details such as weight or thickness. This way, you can use the oldest stock first, ensuring good performance.   Keep away from chemicals and strong odorsSublimation paper can absorb odors and chemical substances from its surroundings. Store it away from cleaning supplies, paint, and other chemicals to ensure no excess odors or contaminants affect its quality.
